United Kingdom Tourist Visa
The United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, although located in Europe, are not currently a member of either the Schengen area or the European Union. The United Kingdom has never joined the Schengen Agreement and has entered a new phase by leaving the European Union on 31 January 2020. Following this change, a transition period has been introduced between the United Kingdom and the European Union until 1 January 2021.
The United Kingdom visa is available in different types. Depending on your travel purpose, you can choose between single-entry or multiple-entry visas. Short-term visas only cover your first visit, but multiple-entry visas allow for longer stays. There are also long-term visas, such as two-year, five-year and ten-year options.
A United Kingdom visa is usually issued for a period of 6 months, meaning that you are allowed to stay in the country for 6 months after obtaining the visa. You can also plan to stay longer with multiple-entry visas. One of the most important factors in applying for a visa is your travel purpose and the length of your planned trip.
Documents Required for a UK Visa Application
When applying for a United Kingdom visa, you must submit the following documents:
- The original of your passport and a copy of its first page
- If applicable, copies of your previous visas and entry-exit stamps
- A copy of your national ID card
- A letter from your employer* and, if available, a salary card statement (for students, a letter from the educational institution*)
- A bank statement from an account in your name* (Detailed information about the required amount is provided below)
- A bank statement showing transactions for at least the last three months from an account in your name
- If applicable, copies of property ownership documents* and your vehicle registration certificate
- Proof of your civil status* (If you are married, a copy of your marriage certificate; if you have children under 18, their birth certificates; or if your marriage has ended, a copy of the divorce certificate)
- Flight booking confirmations for your trip
- Hotel reservation confirmations for your trip
- A visa application form completed in English
- If you are applying for a business visa rather than a tourist visa, an official invitation letter related to the business, event, or meeting in question
The documents marked with an “*” must be submitted to the embassy in English. If you have obtained the original document not in English but in Azerbaijani, then each of these documents must be notarized and translated into English and submitted to the embassy.
The amount in your bank account varies depending on the travel dates you have indicated, i.e. the duration of your stay in the United Kingdom, the price of your flight tickets and hotels, etc. In general, it is advisable to indicate an amount in your bank account of at least 4,000-5,000 AZN (the equivalent in euros or US dollars is also valid) for a one-week trip. This amount should fully cover your travel plan. When calculating the amount, you can add the cost of your tickets and hotel reservations and an average daily cost of 70-80 pounds for each day you indicate that you will stay in the country, and assume a slightly higher figure than you received.
If you are an entrepreneur, you can submit documents to the embassy that will replace the certificate from your workplace (a copy of your TIN, a certificate of your turnover from the Ministry of Taxes, an extract from the register of your company). If you are unemployed, studying, or in any case, you are sponsoring another person to cover the costs of your trip, in this case, a copy of that person's ID card, a certificate from your workplace (if an entrepreneur, the documents listed above), a certificate and extract from your bank account (this bank account can be in your name or the name of the sponsor), if you have a family relationship, a document confirming this (for example, if it is your parent, your birth certificate, if it is a brother or sister, both birth certificates, etc.) and a sponsorship paper must be submitted to the embassy. If the applicant is under 18 years of age, in this case, if traveling alone, a copy of the permission document from both parents or from the other parent if traveling with one of the parents, to leave the country, must also be submitted during the visa application.
Note that even if you submit documents such as TIN, turnover certificate from the Ministry of Taxes, extract from the register of your company or sponsorship letter, permission letter, you must have each of these documents translated into English and certified by a notary.
Probability of Obtaining a UK Visa
When applying for a UK visa, your chances of getting a visa are largely dependent on your personal profile. Your job stability, high-ranking position, and above-average monthly income (people earning between 600-700 AZN per month can get such visas) are the main factors that affect the positive outcome of your application. At the same time, the amount in your bank account should be sufficient to cover all the costs of your trip. Also, factors that make you attached to the country – such as property in your name, family members, and other social connections – also increase the chances of your visa application being approved. If you have no previous travel history, especially if you do not have Schengen or other visas, it may be a little more difficult to apply for a UK visa.
However, if the other factors in your profile (income, job, connections) are high and strong, then even a lack of travel history will not prevent you from getting a visa. Also, the invitation letter you provide when applying for a business visa plays an important role. If you indicate in this letter that your trip is for business purposes or that you have previous business trips, these facts will have a positive impact on your application.
