How to Get a Greek Visa for Traveling to Crete Island?

Updated: 03 June 2026 17 views 4 min. read

Crete, the largest and one of the most popular islands in Greece, is one of the most sought-after Mediterranean destinations for millions of tourists every year. With its Blue Flag beaches, ancient historical cities, rich cuisine, and warm climate, Crete is considered an ideal destination for both family holidays and romantic or adventure-filled trips. In recent years, increasing interest from Azerbaijan and the availability of direct flights have made Crete even more accessible.

Citizens of Azerbaijan are required to hold a valid Schengen visa in order to travel to Crete. Proper preparation of documents, justification of financial stability, and a clear travel plan play a crucial role in the success of the visa application process.

In this article, we will explain in detail which visa is required to visit Crete, how to apply for a Greek visa, the necessary documents, the visa procedure, flight options from Baku to Crete, and all important information you need for a smooth travel experience.

Greek Schengen Visa

Azerbaijani citizens who wish to travel to Crete must apply for a Schengen visa issued by Greece. This visa not only allows entry to Greece but also to all other countries within the Schengen Zone. Greek Schengen visas are issued as either single-entry or multiple-entry visas. Depending on the applicant’s travel history and submitted documents, visas may be granted for short-term or longer durations.

Although a Schengen visa allows travel to other Schengen countries, it is strongly recommended that your first entry into the Schengen Area is through the country that issued your visa, in this case Greece. This reduces the risk of additional questioning at border control.

If you plan to include countries such as Italy, Malta, Spain, or others in your itinerary, this is generally acceptable and does not negatively affect your visa application. However, Greece must remain your main destination where you spend the longest duration of your trip. This is essential for applying through the Greek consulate.

Which Visa Type is Required for Crete?

For travelers from Azerbaijan, the required visa type is a short-term Schengen visa (Type C) issued by Greece. This visa allows stays of up to 90 days within the Schengen Area for tourism, leisure, or visiting family and friends, and is fully valid for travel to Crete.

The most commonly issued visa type is the tourist Schengen visa, which allows free travel across Greece, including Crete. If your purpose is visiting family or friends, you may apply based on an invitation letter.

Additionally, for frequent travelers or those planning multiple trips, a multiple-entry Schengen visa may be issued. This visa can be valid for 6 months, 1 year, or even longer, allowing multiple entries into the Schengen Area.

How Does the Greek Visa Application Process Work?

The Greek Schengen visa application process is carried out through the Embassy of Greece in Azerbaijan. The final decision is made by the consular section of the embassy based on the submitted documents.

To submit your application, you must first schedule a visa appointment. Appointments can be arranged by contacting the embassy during working days. The available dates usually depend on your planned travel dates, meaning that later travel dates may result in later appointment slots.

During the submission process, applicants are required to attend a short interview. In this interview, questions may be asked about your travel purpose, personal background, employment, and travel plans. This interview plays an additional role in the visa evaluation process.

It is important to note that applications are only accepted with a предварily scheduled appointment. Walk-in submissions are not accepted. Applications can be submitted up to 6 months before the planned travel date, and personal attendance is mandatory.

The visa processing time is usually between 5 to 15 working days, although it may sometimes be shorter or longer. Therefore, it is recommended to plan your trip accordingly.

The visa fee is 35 EUR and must be paid in local currency in cash. The equivalent amount in Azerbaijani manat is determined based on the daily exchange rate set by the embassy.

Required Documents for a Greek Visa

When applying for a Greek Schengen visa, you must submit the following documents:

  • Original passport and a copy of the first page
  • Copies of previous visas and entry/exit stamps (if any)
  • Copy of ID card
  • Employment certificate* and bank salary statement (for students, a certificate from the educational institution)
  • Employment verification from the e-government portal*
  • Bank account statement in your name* (details of required funds are explained below)
  • Property ownership documents (if available)* and vehicle registration copy
  • Proof of marital status* (marriage certificate, divorce document, or birth certificates for children)
  • Two biometric photos (3.5x4.5 cm, white background)
  • Flight reservation for your trip
  • Hotel reservation for your stay
  • Travel insurance covering the entire Schengen trip
  • Completed application form in English
  • Appointment confirmation document
  • Invitation letter (if applying for business or official travel)

Documents marked with an asterisk (*) must be submitted in English. If originally issued in Azerbaijani, they must be translated and notarized into English.

Additional Document Requirements in the Greek Visa Process

After submission, the embassy may contact the applicant during the review process. In some cases, additional documents or updated information may be requested. For example, confirmation of hotel bookings or proof that reservations are valid may be required. Therefore, all submitted information must be accurate and verifiable.

The required bank balance depends on the duration and cost of your trip, including flights, hotels, and daily expenses. For a 7-day trip, it is generally recommended to show a minimum balance of 2,500–3,000 AZN (or equivalent in EUR/USD). On average, you should also calculate 70–80 EUR per day for daily expenses in the Schengen Area.

If the applicant is self-employed, they may submit documents such as their tax identification number (TIN), tax office turnover certificate, and company registration documents instead of an employment certificate. Unemployed applicants or students may apply through a sponsor. In this case, sponsor documents such as ID, income proof, bank statements, and a sponsorship letter are required, along with documents proving family relationship. For applicants under 18, parental consent is mandatory.

All these documents, especially financial and company-related papers, may need to be translated into English and notarized.
